Ki Hajar Dewantara was born May 2, 1889 in Yogyakarta. His full name is Raden Mas Soewardi Soeryaningrat. He is from the Pakualaman family. His parents were Raden Ayu Sandiah and Prince Soerjaningrat. Ki Hajar Dewantara attended the Europeesche Lagere School (els) where the Dutch colonial era was elementary school in Indonesia. After graduating from ELS, he continued at STOVIA (Bumiputera School of Education), a school for the education of indigenous doctors in Batavia in the Dutch East Indies colonial era. He worked as a writer and journalist at various Tjahaja Timoer newspapers, Midden Java, De Expres, Sediotomo, Kaoem Moeda, Poesara, and Oetoesan Hindia. Besides working as a writer, he is also active in social and political organizations. Since the establishment of Boedi Oetomo in 1908, he has been active in propaganda studies to make Indonesian society aware of the importance of a sense of unity in nation and state.
Ki Hajar Dewantara was known as a pioneer figure of education for Indonesian natives from the Dutch colonial era. On July 3, 1922, he succeeded in establishing a Taman Siswa National School. This college strongly emphasizes national sense education to the natives so that they love the nation and the homeland and fight for independence. He was appointed as Minister of Education. Finally, Ki Hajar Dewantara was declared the Father of Indonesian National Education and his birth day was made as the National Education Day. He has three slogans, such as Ing ngarso sung tuladha, Ing madyo mangun karso, Tut Wuri Handayani. However, on April 26, 1959 in Yogyakarta, Ki Hajar Dewantara died and was buried in Taman Wijaya Brata.
